Overwatch herbicide incentive offers growers a valuable insight

Annual ryegrass resistance continues to challenge Australian growers, making informed herbicide decisions more critical than ever.

Annual ryegrass resistance continues to challenge Australian growers, making informed herbicide decisions more critical than ever.

This season, FMC is offering an opportunity to combine proven pre-emergent weed control with valuable resistance testing – at no extra cost.

Until December 31, growers who purchase a qualifying volume of Overwatch herbicide and/or Overwatch eXL Granules in a single transaction will receive a complimentary $405 herbicide resistance seed test.

Conducted by Plant Science Consulting (PSC), the test screens ryegrass samples against 12 different pre-emergent herbicides and pre-em herbicide mixtures including Overwatch, Rustler, Sakura, Trifluralin, Boxer Gold, Avadex and Luximax.

FMC herbicide portfolio manager Stuart McLaverty says to make smart decisions about resistance management, growers need good data.

“This incentive gives them access to professional testing without the usual cost barrier – and it’s paired with products they already trust to deliver strong pre-emergent control of annual ryegrass as well as other weeds,” he says.

To qualify, growers must purchase enough product to treat a minimum of 440ha.

That’s one of:

  • 5 x 110 L Overwatch herbicide.
  • 15 x 20 kg Overwatch eXL Granules.
  • A combination of both sufficient to meet the 440ha requirement.

After purchase, growers simply upload their tax invoice and details onto FMC’s dedicated landing page.

A test kit will then be sent out, complete with sampling instructions and a unique identifier to ensure accurate tracking.

Growers collect ryegrass panicles from the target paddock and send them to PSC for analysis.

Results are expected mid to late April 2026 and will be communicated directly to the grower.

“This is about helping growers understand what’s working in their paddocks – and what’s not,” Stuart explains.

“Resistance is evolving, and having clarity on herbicide efficacy is essential for long-term planning,” he says.

The offer is limited to 400 test kits, so early participation is encouraged.

While the purchase window closes on December 31, the landing page will remain open until January 15, with all seed samples to be submitted by March 1.

“Overwatch continues to deliver excellent pre-emergence weed control,” Stuart adds.

“Now, with this added incentive, growers can take a proactive step toward managing resistance and protecting their productivity,” he says.
