Sundown Pastoral Company is the 2022 recipient of the Bayer Cotton Grower of the Year Award.

Bayer national row crop sales manager Mark Dawson, congratulated Sundown Pastoral Company managing directors David and Danielle Statham and manager Nick Gillingham, for their commitment to sustainability – realised through regenerative farming practices and for their industry leadership in championing the unique value of the Australian cotton industry.

“One nominee stands out even in this esteemed company: David and Danielle Statham and Nick Gillingham of Sundown Pastoral Company,” Mr Dawson said.

“David and Danielle do an outstanding job of not only telling our story today, but also articulating a story for the future. The vision and passion they bring to our industry is an inspiration to all.”

Mr Dawson emphasised the value of the awards in recognising the innovation and leadership demonstrated by farmers in the cotton industry.

“All the nominees for the 2022 Bayer Cotton Grower of the Year award are worthy storytellers for all of us in the sector. In one of our biggest ever cotton seasons, we have some of our best-ever nominees.”

Sundown Pastoral Company has operated Keytah, near Moree since 1984 and has expanded to be one of the largest cotton producing farms in Australia. David and Danielle Statham are involved in the day-to-day operations of the farm, along with a team of staff headed by Nick Gillingham.

In 2019, Sundown Pastoral expanded into Northern Australia, implementing their sustainable, regenerative practices in a geographically diverse environment.

“David and Danielle have been involved in the cotton industry for more than 30 years. The pair share a vision for change and believe that technology is instrumental in producing sustainable cotton,” Mr Dawson said.

“David’s passion for technology and progressive farming, in conjunction with Danielle’s experience in the fashion industry drove the development of the ‘Good Earth Cotton’ brand, under which the world’s first climate positive cotton was produced.

“David and Danielle are working towards expansion of the Good Earth Cotton system, helping growers to recognise on-farm sustainability benefits, in addition to increased value for their fibre.

“Bayer’s sponsorship of this award is part of our investment in the future of the Australian cotton industry and the individuals who make it so successful. We look forward to continuing our commitment to the industry over the coming years,” Mr Dawson said.
